Finding a best host plan

Finding a needle in a host stack
How can you avoid the lurch and successfully land the right low-cost host your first time out? First, figure out exactly what you want your site to be, both now and in the future. Today, you may just want a simple site for your blog. In a year or two, as people flock to your site to read your brilliant observations, you might need to handle a lot more traffic. Or you might decide to sell T-shirts with your likeness on them, and you'll need some e-commerce tools. In any case, you need to think it through.

When you have a good idea of what you need from a host, it's time to hit the Web and start doing your homework. While you're at it, be sure to follow these simple rules:

Be realistic. Don't expect 24/7 service or maximum uptime with a supercheap hosting provider. "If you're looking to do some mission-critical e-commerce and think you can get away with spending $4.95 a month, you're deluding yourself," says Rawlson King, managing editor for the Web Host Industry Review in Ottawa. Supercheap hosting services are really for hobbyists or static and low-end e-commerce sites where a little downtime won't hurt and support needs are minimal.

Consider the source. Researching your options on the Web is always a good idea, but be careful whose advice you take. What seems like an impartial recommendation may in fact be an ad, says Andrew McMasters, president of FindMyHosting in New Orleans. McMaster's directory makes a small commission from customer referrals but does not accept advertising. "You'll find hundreds of sites that list the 'top hosting companies' where the No. 1 slot is the host that makes the biggest affiliate payout." That is, the order of listings does not always indicate quality.

Another pitfall to look out for is directories owned by the hosts themselves. For example, Webhosting-Directory.com is run by Tawi Del Bosque, the same folks who run FreeHostingWeb, which happens to be the first service recommended in the directory's Budget Hosting section. (Quelle coincidence!)

Ask around. A better source for the inside skinny on hosts is other folks like you. Post questions on forums such as those at the Web Host Directory or WebHosting Talk and check out user reviews at sites such as Web Hosting Ratings and Free-Webhosts.com. Check out the ratings at CNET's hosting guide or simply plug the name of a host into Google Groups and see what newsgroup denizens have to say about it.

Beware bogus claims. Any host offering "unlimited" bandwidth or disk space is just using a marketing ploy, says McMasters. "There's no such thing." Such offers don't necessarily mean a hosting company is dishonest, but consumers need to find out what the limits really are; for example, some low-costs hosts don't allow video or audio downloads due to bandwidth constraints or will restrict access to your site once you exceed bandwidth limitations.

Talk to the company. Even when looking for a low-cost host, it pays to call the phone number and talk to a real person to ask questions, clarify offerings, and find out about pricing. After all, if they don't pick up the phone to make a sale, how likely are they to do it when you have a problem?

Check out what your fellow Netizens have to say before you sign up. (click to enlarge) This is the closest you'll come to a hosting seal of approval. (click to enlarge)

"You can tell a lot from a company's responsiveness," says Shirley Gregory, senior analyst with the EBI Group in Navarre, Florida. "If they're not responsive to questions before you sign up, that's a red flag."

Quiz the host on what each plan offers, ask for references from other customers, and find out where the company is located. This info will come in handy if you have problems later. If you can't reach a live human, move on to your next choice.

Start out slow. If the host you like is a start-up with no track record, "don't commit to too long a service contract, especially at the start," advises Gregory. You may pay a little more for a short-term agreement, but you won't lose big if the host goes belly-up. If they insist on a long-term arrangement, tell them thanks but no thanks and go to the next host on your list.

Get assurances. Though there is no universally recognized Good Hostkeeping Seal of Approval, some third parties will intervene on your behalf if you run into snags. For example, nearly half of the 650 companies on FindMyHosting participate in the site's Hosting Assured program, which requires them to agree to a code of ethics and a mediation process for settling disputes. (McMaster says he's kicked out two hosts for not abiding by the rules, but he declined to name them.)

Have a backup plan. No matter which host you choose, you might find, a month down the road, that it's simply not a good match for you or your business, says Gregory. "It's always good to have a plan in place that lets you migrate your site to another host as quickly and painlessly as possible."

If possible, register your domain yourself, so you won't have difficulty transferring it later, and keep a backup copy of your site in case your host pulls a Houdini on you.

Still, the best strategy is to do your research carefully and make the right choice the first time out, advises King.

"If you select a bad host off the top, it will cost you money down the road because you'll have to sign up with another service, which means setup and transfer costs and possibly some downtime. It's better to make the investment into a credible host initially."

own Web site

So you've finally decided to set up your own Web site. Your needs are modest, and so is your budget. It's natural to wonder if you can save a little money by using a lowball Web host, a company that charges next to nothing for a little disk space, a few e-mail accounts, and some bandwidth. What could go wrong?

Actually, a lot: you could end up paying money for nothing, enduring endless hassles trying to get your site to work, and even losing the site entirely if the provider goes belly-up and you're not prepared.

With the number of Web hosts ranging from 6,000 to 10,000, it's impossible to research all your options and too easy to sign up with a bogus host. While scams and rip-off artists are sometimes the cause of hosting disasters, most such snafus are due to firms that grow too fast and can't keep up with customer orders.

Think that your provider will never fold or that you can spot a scam a mile away? Don't get cocky. Read one user's tale of woe before you sign up with a cheap provider and get important advice on how to avoid similar troubles.

Here are some cheap Web-host warning signs and ways to avoid getting taken for a hosting ride.

Search on the Web

Search on the Web is still mostly text-based. If you want to search inside the actual content of photos, video, or audio (not just their filenames or embedded data), you're out of luck, at least on Google. New tools are emerging, though, that can scan within media files. The latest that I've heard of is Podzinger, a service that does speech-to-text conversion of podcasts and then allows you to search for spoken words and phrases. Other tools in this category: Blinkx and the soon-to-be-released Riya (rumored to be a Google acquisition target). Also, aviation buffs may have noticed that the airplane picture site Airliners.net has a "more like this" picture search.

The next phase of search: Search on the Web is still mostly text-based. If you want to search inside the actual content of photos, video, or audio (not just their filenames or embedded data), you're out of luck, at least on Google. Also, aviation buffs may have noticed that the airplane picture site Airliners.net has a "more like this" picture search.
Yahoo paints towns with dressed-up maps: Less than a month after Google rebranded its maps as Google Local, Yahoo is tweaking its online maps and linking them to local searches. As with Google Local, you can hold down the mouse and slide around the Yahoo Maps beta without waiting for the screen to refresh, and zoom in or out with a slider bar. Driving directions within the Yahoo Maps beta now guide you through multiple stops, which harried working parents and business travelers should appreciate. From a map, you can drag and drop addresses into search fields to find directions. This tool also saves favorite locations for future returns. Yahoo lets you switch back to its older maps, but so far we're finding the new version more elegant.
The strategy of integrating maps with local search hopes to reap advertising profits from businesses looking for attention. Look up apple in your city for instance, and you'll retrieve a list of companies branded with that word, such as an Apple computer store and a Golden Apple Restaurant. This type of search also maps out shops, such as Best Buy, that stock products with apple in their name.
If you're feeling adventurous, Yahoo provides an API to let you tailor the maps to your liking, as fans of Google Maps have done to chart subway routes, jobs, Wi-Fi hot spots, and much more. (On an odd note, blogger Matt Cutts found that you'll reach The Dude's Fish Store if you type in the address of Google's Mountain View, California, headquarters. A prank?)
Google Base to take on eBay: Move over, eBay and Craigslist. Google's getting into the classifieds business. Currently, the plan appears to target fixed-price offerings and not the auction business that eBay is best known for. Nevertheless, Google's entry into the fixed-price business could pose a threat for other classifieds sites, especially those with advertising at the core of their business model. eBay's fixed-price offering, called Buy It Now, currently makes up nearly 30 percent of its total gross merchandise volume. Google's new service, called Google Base, will rely on keyword-based advertising for revenue. Google Base is currently under development, and there's no word as yet on when the service will be publicly available.
Google Maps go Local; mash-ups go loco: Google gets so much press for and use of its free products that it's easy to overlook that most of them are still in beta, the testing phase. Presto, the beta label disappeared overnight from the fabled Google Maps, now called Google Local.
Goggle Local has a new a split-screen layout, with directory listings on the left and maps or satellite views on the right. Google hopes that it can finance its freebies by linking maps with ad-laced local search, à la Yahoo Maps. Microsoft is also scrambling to profit from local search.
Such directories are most relevant when they adapt through the tinkering of users. Yet to the horror of people who have grown to rely on hacks of Google Maps, some of the dozens of mash-ups, such as one of the New York City subway, suddenly aren't working anymore, says the Google Maps Mania blog.

Obtaining cheap hosting

Obtaining hosting: Web hosting is often provided as part of a general Internet access plan; there are many free and paid providers offering these services. The free services generally have restrictions on how the space can be used, including but not limited to: advertising, bandwidth restrictions, and programs that can be used to edit sites.
Businesses are generally restricted to using a paid Web host to host their site on. Paid Web hosts usually provide many more features, including 24/7 support and personalized assistance. Sites hosted on paid Web hosts also tend to load more quickly since each server hosts fewer sites, giving each site a larger proportion of resources.
A customer also needs to evaluate the requirements of the application. Such considerations include database server software, scripting software, and operating system. Active Server Pages (ASP) web sites usually require a Microsoft Windows based server platform. Most hosting providers provide Linux-based web hosting which offers a wide range of different software. A typical configuration for a Linux server is the LAMP Platform. This includes Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP (or Python, Perl or Ruby). Usually there is limited interoperability between the two, although Linux servers can integrate with Windows file services through Samba, and many Linux hosts provide support for Microsoft FrontPage server extensions.
Regardless of whether one is a business or has a personal site that needs to be hosted, it has to be created first. HTML experience is usually required to create a site (and more advanced languages can be used for interactive content, such as ASP or those languages used in a LAMP setup), but those without design experience can hire a Web designer to do the heavy lifting. Once the site is online there's not much else that's required: the host generally handles the technical behind-the-scenes work with the server.
Recently, web hosting packages often include a Web Content Management System, so the end-user doesn't have to worry about the more technical aspects. There exist a growing number of Typo3- or Mambo-Hosters. Other popular content management systems include PHP-Nuke and e107.

Types of web hosting

Types of hosting:
Free hosting: just about all the free web hosting available is extremely limited when compared to paid hosting. Free web hosts generally require their own ads on your site, only allow web-based uploading and editing of your site, and have very tight disk space and traffic limits. Still, most people get their start via free web hosting.
Image hosting: hosting only a few different formats of images. This type of hosting is often free and most require registrations. Most image hosts allow hotlinking, so that you can upload images on their servers and not waste space/bandwidth on yours.
Shared hosting: one's Web site is placed on the same server as several hundred other sites. A problem with another site on the server can bring all of the sites down. Shared hosting also brings with it some restrictions regarding what exactly can be done, although these restrictions are nowhere near as restrictive as for free hosting.
Clustered hosting: designed to eliminate the problems inherent with typical shared hosting infrastructures, it offers the benefits of a dedicated server, but at affordable shared hosting prices. This hosting technology platform provides customers with a “clustered” handling of security, load balancing, and necessary Web site resources. Resources are virtualized beyond the limits of one physical server and dynamic load balancing disperses traffic to ensure performance is optimal for all customer accounts.
Reseller hosting: designed for those who want to become Web hosts themselves. One gets a large amount of space and bandwidth that can be divided up among as many sites as the user wants to put on his account. A reseller account is placed on the same server with other reseller accounts, just like with shared hosting but there are fewer accounts.
Virtual Private Server (or Virtual Dedicated Server) hosting: Virtual Private Server technology enables one physical server to house several Virtual Environments which behave exactly like an isolated stand-alone server. This is often a much more affordable solution than a dedicated server, normally offering all the same benefits, such as root access.
Dedicated hosting: With dedicated hosting, one gets a server of one's own. They have no restrictions, except for those designed to maintain the integrity of the Web host's network (for instance, banning sites with adult content due to the increase risk of attack by crackers and grey legal issues for the ISP). Unless a separate plan is purchased from the host, the user is also generally on his own. This can be an expensive proposition, as the purchase of the dedicated server itself is generally far more expensive compared to shared hosting.
Colocated hosting: This involves a server the user purchases himself and installs at the host's data center. Besides unmonitored reboots, the user must pay extra for many services dedicated hosting provides by default. Colocated hosting is generally chosen by people with server administration experience and those with more significant needs than which can be satisfied by dedicated or shared hosting. This is usually the most expensive and least cost effective option if you are not colocating many servers.
File hosting: A service that focuses on hosting files such as shareware software, MP3s, games and videos.

All About Web Hosting

Web hosting: Web hosting is a service that provides individuals, organizations and users with online systems for storing information, images, video, or any content accessible via the Web. Web hosts are companies that provide space on a server they own for use by their clients as well as providing Internet connectivity, typically in a data center. Web hosts can also provide data center space and connectivity to the Internet for servers they do not own to be located in their data center.
Service scope: The scopes of hosting services vary widely. The most basic is file hosting (or Web page hosting), where Web pages and other files can be uploaded via FTP or a Web interface. The files are usually delivered to the Web "as is" or with little processing. Many ISPs offer this service for free to their subscribers. People can also obtain Web page hosting from services such as GeoCities or Yahoo!. Web page hosting is typically free, advertisement sponsored, or cheap. Web page hosting is generally sufficient only for personal home pages. A complex site calls for a more comprehensive package that provide database support and application development platforms (e.g. PHP, Java, and ASP.NET). These facilities allow the customers to write or install scripts for applications like forums and content management. For e-commerce, SSL is also required. The host may also provide a Web interface (e.g. cPanel) for managing the Web server and installing scripts as well as other services like e-mail. Some hosts specialize in certain software or services (e.g. e-commerce). They are commonly used by larger companies to outsource network infrastructure to a hosting company.
